September 02, 2010 Subject: Dear Senator, Governor Spitzer's proposal to increase the investment in New York State schools by the historic amount of $7 billion over four years and to tie this investment to the ground breaking new accountability standards is a recipe for excellence in education. This budget is the first step in ensuring that school children from Buffalo to Brooklyn and Plattsburgh to Long Island receive the state school aid that they need to achieve success. The level of funding that Governor Spitzer has proposed reflects the real needs of our kids and will go a long way towards ensuring that every child in New York State achieves a quality education. This plan is great for upstate New York as well as high need districts across New York State. The Senate Majority’s plan to send more money to the wealthiest districts on Long Island at the expense of our own is just wrong. Governor Spitzer's proposal to establish a new, fair, transparent and simple formula for distributing state aid that is based upon the actual needs of our schools will for the first time ensure that New York State has a fair and equitable system. It is equally important to note that Governor Spitzer's budget proposal would not take away money from any school district and every district would in fact receive an increase in state aid. With any additional state aid comes enormous responsibility to ensure that this money results in success for our kids. Therefore we are very pleased with Governor Spitzer's groundbreaking plan for accountability. It is only right that every school district should have the resources needed to educate every child and that once these resources are delivered the people of New York should expect success. Governor Spitzer's vision of excellence in education and today’s budget proposal is exactly what our kids need in order to be prepared for college and the jobs of the 21st century. I strongly encourage you to support the $7 billion in new funding, the new foundation formula, and the new accountability Contracts for Excellence.
