Stop Human Trafficking

September 02, 2010 Subject: Dear Representative/Senator: Each year it is estimated that almost one million people, most of them women and girls, are trafficked and sold into modern slavery across international borders – including approximately 16,000 who are brought into the United States. Many more victims are trafficked domestically within our country. The United States of America, founded on individual freedom and liberty, must vigorously combat this modern day form of slavery. Human trafficking is not only an egregious violation of human rights, but also a national security threat that is closely connected with transnational organized crime, with potentially important implications for the fight against terrorism. This is one of the most important issues facing the United States today. I therefore urge you to support H.R. 972, the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) 2005. The TVPRA 2005 will continue the important initiatives used to fight trafficking that were established by the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 and its reauthorization act of 2003. It will also address critical needs in expanding the war against trafficking, including exploring the link between HIV/AIDS and trafficking, holding both U.S. and international military personnel and government contractors accountable for labor and sex trafficking abuses, preventing the trafficking of vulnerable women and children in post-conflict and post-disaster settings, and supporting and expanding state and local victim service programs. It is important that the United States government continues to demonstrate our nation’s commitment to combating human trafficking in the U.S. and abroad, and I thank you for making the passage of this legislation a priority.
