February 09, 2010 Subject: I wish to appeal to you on behalf of CHARLES NEALY, who is due to be executed on March 20, 2007. My sympathies go out to the family and loved ones of Jiten Bhakta, and I agree this was a very tragic event that cannot go unpunished. However, ending the life of the person who has been convicted is never a solution to the problem of crime facing our society—particularly when there is no strong evidence that CHARLES NEALY was linked to this crime. The state of Texas should not execute Charles Nealy for his role in this crime. Executing Nealy would violate the right to life as declared in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and constitute the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. Furthermore, Nealy was denied habeas appeal, even though the prosecution presented conflicting eyewitness testimony during the trial.
