Support Affordable Housing

Tell Congress: PASS the GSE bill with the new AFFORDABLE HOUSING FUND! In communities across the country, families face a critical shortage of affordable housing. But we have a chance to get new money to build, preserve, and rehabilitate housing that the lowest income families can afford. A bill is moving through Congress (H.R. 1461) that requires Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac put 5 percent of their after-tax profits into an Affordable Housing Fund to support housing production for extremely and very low income families. Similar legislation is expected in the Senate shortly. But the forces opposing us are powerful. Every Senator and Representative must hear from their constituents about how important it is that he or she votes for the Affordable Housing Fund. As your constituent and an advocate for affordable housing for low income families, I am writing to urge you to support the establishment of an Affordable Housing Fund as part of GSE legislation. Such a fund was included in the House Financial Services Committee's GSE bill, H.R. 1461. The fund would be used to support rental housing, homeownership, and community development needs and would be funded by directing 5% of after-tax Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac profits to the fund. Households served by the fund's housing programs could have extremely low or very low incomes, depending on the local need. There is an obvious need to assist extremely low and very low income households in our state to afford safe, decent and affordable housing. The affordable housing fund would allow developers to help meet the housing needs of extremely low and very low income families, the elderly and people with disabilities. I urge you to support the inclusion of an Affordable Housing Fund in the GSE legislation. I thank you advance for your support and look forward to your reply on this vital issue.
