National Forest Protection and Restoration Act

Our national forests have faced nearly a century of relentless industrial logging and road building that have left our forests and watersheds in a rapidly deteriorating condition.

The Congressionally directed US Forest Service timber sale program is responsible for much of this damage. Unfortunately, the budget of the agency of the Forest Service is directly tied to industrial logging and resource extraction not forest protection and restoration.

NFPRA will foster a restoration century by promoting bona-fide, ecologically based restoration projects. These projects will put people in rural communities to work conducting road removal and watershed restoration activities.

I urge you to protect and restore America’s National Forests by co-sponsoring the National Forest Protection and Restoration Act, H.R. 3420. Representatives James Leach (R-IA) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY) have teamed up to champion NFPRA and hold it up as a solution to Bush Administration’s industrial logging agenda for our national forests.

Our National Forests were established over 100 years ago for all Americans. These forests provide clean drinking water, critical wildlife habitat, and outdoor recreation.

These valuable amenities are being squandered by the Congressionally funded commercial timber sale program which has left us with clearcuts, landslides and endangered species.

With less than 2% of our nation’s wood products coming from National Forests, we do not need to log National Forests to supply our demand for wood.

As a taxpayer, I am outraged that I am forced to subsidize this needless destruction of my National Forests.

The National Forest Protection and Restoration Act (NFPRA) would reverse this trend by redirecting the $1.2 billion timber sale subsidy to put rural communities to work restoring the damage to forests and watersheds. It will save taxpayers money, reduce the deficit, cut corporate welfare and help communities adapt to wildland fire.
