Flood Washington, Not Our Coast - Protect the Gulf's Wetlands and Communities

On September 15th 2005, the President pledged to rebuild the Gulf Coast and do whatever it President Bush in Pledges to Rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast takes to make New Orleans and the region rise again.

It is critical that the failures in the design and construction of the Army Corps of Engineers' hurricane protection system be completely investigated and remedied, and that the Gulf Coast receives the federal resources and support necessary for effective hurricane protection which restores, protects and enhances our natural defenses such as wetlands, coastal cypress forests and barrier islands. Please take a moment to remind the President of his pledge and urge new leaders in Washington to hold him to it.

With over 100,000 Louisianans displaced, we want to flood Washington with an e-mail for each of them. Please ask your friends, family and colleagues to take action as well.

Dear President Obama and our Congressional Leaders

In the over three years since Hurricane Katrina, and then Hurricane Rita, ravaged New Orleans and the Gulf coast, Congress has stepped up to fund the immediate repairs to Louisiana's levee system and started the process to develop a plan for category 5 storm protection.  However, Louisiana still has not received the necessary authorization to start large scale restoration of our coastal wetlands.

To revitalize New Orleans and other affected communities will take a genuine commitment to the future.  To secure the natural bounty of coastal Louisiana—America’s Wetland—as part of our legacy to future generations will take a commitment to protecting and restoring America’s greatest wetland treasure.  This Administration and this Congress have a responsibility to act to save these treasures and the time to make that commitment is now.

At the heart of the revitalization effort and at the heart of your responsibility is a commitment to three things:

1.  Honest and effective storm protection, up to a Category 5 level, for New Orleans and other population centers, 
2.  Coastal restoration and conservation,
3.  A willingness to provide oversight and demand accountability for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and their critical yet troubling role which they must play in protecting and restoring our coast and communities.

These pieces are inextricably tied together, and are key responsibilities of the federal government.  Each day that passes without a commitment to the survival and prosperity of New Orleans, south Louisiana and America’s Wetland compounds and prolongs this tragedy.  The time to act is now.
