More Info: As early as tomorrow, the Senate will release a report that finds fault with the way the U.S. intelligence community gathered evidence on Iraq's weapons and its links to Al Qaeda before the war. Unfortunately, the Senate doesn't look at the role of one important and unforgettable actor: The White House.

If Fahrenheit 9/11 taught us one thing about the Bush administration, it's that Bush has been keeping Americans in the dark on the war in Iraq. We shouldn't lay the intelligence failure solely at the feet of the intelligence community. We need to create an independent commission to investigate the role of the White House.

Dear President Bush:

I urge you to take the necessary steps to ensure the creation of an independent investigation into the Iraq intelligence failures. The Senate report coming out tomorrow only addresses the role of the intelligence community, and I believe this isn't enough. Americans have a right to know how our entire government got it wrong on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.

For a long time your administration successfully convinced Americans that we'd uncover weapons in Iraq and that Iraq had strong ties to Al Qaeda. A year after the invasion, we still haven't found weapons, we've discredited the human intelligence from Iraqi exiles, and the 9/11 Commission reports that there was no strong link between Iraq and Al Qaeda. Moreover, instead of giving us upfront answers, your officials have backtracked, claiming they never said there was a link between Iraq and Al Qaeda and that Iraq's weapons programs were as much of a threat as the actual presence of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.

We need to get to the bottom of these blunders. I feel that the only way to truly make sure this doesn't happen again is by creating an independent commission--not appointed by the White House--that releases its preliminary findings as soon as possible.
